Progress Information
This is a brief outline of the requirements to achieve this promotion. A more
detailed curriculum is available at our school.
- White Belt
- Beginning Rank-The beginner's belt color. This is your chance to
learn some of the basic principles of martial arts. White represents a
primitive stage of development. White also symbolizes purity. Thus, a
seed as it lies dormant beneath the snows of winter.
- Yellow (Juniors Only)
- Beginning Rank-Yellow is the the beginning stage of growth and
development, like the new growth that appears in spring.
- Laker Belt (Juniors Only)
- Beginning Rank-Like Yellow, the Laker Belt is expanding on growth
and development. At this level, a student first begins to reveal their
newfound knowledge.
- Purple Belt
- Beginning Rank-Purple represents new growth, like the spring of the
seasons. The member has new knowledge to grow and a sense of Tang Soo Do
direction is developed.
- Orange Belt
- Beginning Rank-At orange belt, students should have a basic
understanding of beginning techniques. Orange represents the knowledge
that begins to emerge like the budding of a young plant in spring.
- Camouflage Belt (Juniors Only)
- Beginning Rank-At Camouflage belt, students should be expanding on
their basic understanding of beginning techniques, and at the same time
be preparing themselves to move on to the Intermediate Ranks.
- 8th Gup Blue Belt
- Intermediate Rank-Blue Belt's start to understand the concept of
becoming a martial artist. Weapons, Sparring & grappling are introduced
at this rank. Students at this level are still continuing to grow in their
knowledge and understanding of the art.
- 7th Gup Blue Belt
- Intermediate Rank-Blue Belt's start to understand the concept of
becoming a martial artist. Weapons, Sparring & grappling are introduced
at this rank. Students at this level are still continuing to grow in
their knowledge and understanding of the art.
- 6th Gup Green Belt
- Intermediate Rank-Green represents growth. At this rank students
start to realize their talents. Green Belt's are encouraged to help as
assistants for the lower ranking classes. The best way to learn, is to
teach. Students at this level are still continuing to grow in their
knowledge and understanding of the art.
- 5th Gup Green Belt
- Intermediate Rank-Green represents growth. At this rank students
start to realize their talents. Green Belt's are encouraged to help as
assistants for the lower ranking classes. The best way to learn, is to
teach. Students at this level are still continuing to grow in their
knowledge and understanding of the art.
- 4th Gup Green Belt
- Intermediate Rank-Green represents growth. At this rank students
start to realize their talents. Green Belt's are encouraged to help as
assistants for the lower ranking classes. The best way to learn, is to
teach. Students at this level are still continuing to grow in their
knowledge and understanding of the art.
- 3rd Gup Red Belt
- Intermediate Rank-Red represents blood, life, energy, attention, and
control. The students power and techniques begin to bloom and ripen, as
they begin to mature as martial artists. Now the student begins the
preparation of mind and body for the final steps needed on the Journey
to Black Belt.
- 2nd Gup Red Belt
- Intermediate Rank-Red represents blood, life, energy, attention, and
control. The students power and techniques begin to bloom and ripen, as
they begin to mature as martial artists. Now the student begins the
preparation of mind and body for the final steps needed on the Journey
to Black Belt.
- 1st Gup Red Belt / Poom Belt
- Intermediate Rank-Poom Belt symbolizes a mastery of basics,
calmness, dignity, and sincerity. This level is the final stage of one
life cycle and the beginning of the next. Thus, it is not the end of a
students growth, but rather symbolizes a willingness and dedication to
the students further training in the martial arts.
- 1st Dan Black Belt
- Advanced Rank-Black represents mastery, calmness, dignity, and
sincerity. Black Belt is the first real stage of martial arts. True
character develop begins as you learn the basics of becoming a teacher
of the martial arts. Thus, we see that attaining the rank of Black Belt
is the beginning of a path which leads up through the ranks of the
higher Black Belt to true mastery.
- 2nd Dan Black Belt
- Advanced Rank-2nd Dan represents the transition from student to
teacher. While working on mastering your own martial arts skills, you
must also learn to teach those skills to others. Now you are starting
to understand the basics of being a Black Belt.
- 3rd Dan Black Belt
- Advanced Rank-3rd Dan continues the transition from student to
teacher. You have now begun mastering your own martial arts skills.
Now you are starting to understand the meaning of being a Black Belt.
- 4th Dan Black Belt - Master's Rank
- Master's Rank-At this point most of your learning comes from
teaching others. You have mastered the basics of Tang Soo Do, and now
must teach others to do the same. You are now on the road to becoming a
true master of Martial Arts, a Grand Master.
- 5th Dan Black Belt
- Master's Rank-At this point most of your learning comes from
teaching others. You have mastered the basics of Tang Soo Do, and now
must work on mastering the advanced techniques. You are now on the road
to becoming a true master of Martial Arts, a Grand Master.
- 6th Dan Black Belt
- Master's Rank-At this point most of your learning comes from
teaching others. You have mastered the basics of Tang Soo Do, and now
must work on mastering the advanced techniques. You are now on the road
to becoming a true master of Martial Arts, a Grand Master.
- 7th Dan Black Belt - Grand Master
- Grand Master-You have mastered the art of Tang Soo Do. Now you must
teach others to do the same.
- 8th Dan Black Belt
- Grand Master-You have mastered the art of Tang Soo Do. Now you must
teach others to do the same.
- 9th Dan Black Belt
- Grand Master-This is the highest rank in Tang Soo Do.
